Shane, the Read Aloud (Introduction and Chapter 1)

HE RODE INTO OUR VALLEY in the summer of ‘89…”

Backstory to Shane - the Read Aloud

Hi, everyone..

I’m Jesse McCarthy, the guy above reading Shane, by Jack Schaefer.

I don’t have much to add here as background about myself or about the book that wasn’t already in the opening video, but over the next few readings I’m sure you’ll come to know me — and Shane the man — a little better.

As I mentioned in the intro, years ago I was an elementary and junior-high teacher; now though I mainly “teach” teachers and parents.

But back when I worked with children/students every day, I would do read alouds with 4th and 5th graders, and sometimes all the way up to 8th graders. Most loved it — and so did I.

Now I’ve decided to read a book with you all out there, regardless of your age really, although I’d recommend you be at least 13 years old (I’m saying that so I don’t get in trouble with overprotective YouTube) and at most 118 (that’s the age of the oldest person alive right now). Me, I’m 40 💪 and I first read Shane in my early 20s.

The edition of Shane that I’m using for this read aloud can be found here, and I suggest you buy it (or buy another edition, it doesn’t matter). If you’re broke, ask your parents to get it for you; or you can go get a job; or maybe sell your family TV. Just do something to get a copy of your own as it’s worth having for yourself. (Note: I don’t make any money from sales of the book — I just love Shane and want you to meet him.)

In terms of a schedule for Shane - the Read Aloud, I’ll be releasing a new video every Sunday, by 9pm ET latest, until we reach the end.

If at any time you’d like to contact me with a question or a comment, or with a response to one of my questions, or with anything on your mind really, feel free to email me: jesse@jessemccarthy.com.

Now I hope you’re able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride alongside the whole Starrett family: Bob, Joe, Marian — and the man, Shane.

Abrazo,
Jesse
